It's a daily injection of levity for a boring working mom with little glamour in her life. One of the things I love about them (besides their willingness to come clean about their obsession with 90210) is the level-headed reasoning behind their commentary. The site itself may be judgmental, but IMO it's based in sound reason.

One very good example is their take on the Miley/Hannah photoshoot scandal. It's not like Miley was trying to be Marilyn or anything. She's 15! She's growing up - and she's gorgeous. She is just what I want my little girl to think of when she is 15. Don't you think if we deny they are sexual around that age, they'll freak out when they figure it out on their own? I do. I think we need to haul that one out of the closet and allow them to try out a place in between the Madonna (not that Madonna, the Virgin Mary one) and the Whore (ole Mary M.). Because frankly, the Madonna gets old and they're looking for the in between. If we don't acknowledge it and allow them to find it, they'll go straight to the only other option they know, and we don't need any more little boys with mommas in rehab.

Sadness

I'm busy, productive even, but I'm sad inside. As usual, In The Pink Texas (Say It Ain’t So) is dead on and much more eloquent than I. So, while I want to belive that Bill's tactless and possibly racist statements earlier this week about Obama were innocent, I don't know that I can swallow that pill. I think I see that Billary are determined to say whatever needs to be said to get to the goal, for the greater good, ends justify the means, etc. And I'm not sure I'm ok with that. I've always been turned off by that side of politics.

I've been worried about Obama's lack of experience. His lack of depth and unknown ability to work the delicate political climate of our country and the world to get what needs to be done done. But lately I've been rethinking it, due in part to this article in the Daily News by Robert Dallek, author of a biography of JFK and a professor of history at BU. Mr. Dallek comments on the latest comparisons between Obama and JFD and states very clearly "When it comes to experience, Obama is no John Kennedy." However more interestingly, makes a much more important observation regarding the importance of experience in a President's ability to lead well. "An examination of Kennedy's own record - and of the broader sweep of history - leads us to this critical conclusion: Obama's lack of experience shouldn't be considered a liability. Many of our most experienced Presidents have made disastrous choices. In the long life of the republic, judgment trumps experience, almost every time."

Lately I wonder about Billary's judgment. But don't you think it sucks if he screws it up for her again?

Strange and Nasty Plants

I just found my son's next birthday present. Not just our brains, but our consciousness, too. So, we might be creating our whole world (you are creating me, this blog written by me for you to read, American Idol (shudder), Masterpiece Theater for you to not watch and news about wars and natural disasters that aren't really happening) in our minds--these free floating brains. Man, try to make a movie out of that.

I'll admit it, when I first started reading the article I thought, huh, cosmetologists? These cosmologists don't do facials or mani-pedis. What they do is sit around and smoke pot and play the "what if" game with lots of fancy numbers. I mean, I don't doubt these folks are smarter than me, but I do wonder; what they are doing to benefit our world?

Perhaps they can answer my questions, such as what happens when two bubbles rub against each other. Is that how Medium can see dead people? Or where the Matrix is? What about the concept of a greater being? You know, Yaweh, an omniscient, omnipotent and omnipresent being? What is the probability of that thing? Deep thoughts people. I've got a very small collection at home; most are my husband's or my kids'. Sometimes an amazing movie comes along, with the right touch of whimsy, music, joy and hope, and I have to have it. It's been a while since I've wanted to own a movie. The last one was Chicago.

A quick synopsis of the movie off of Amazon reads: Escape into the enchanted world of chivalry and romance in Stardust, an epic tale starring Claire Danes with Michelle Pfeiffer and Robert De Niro. In hopes of wooing a beautiful girl (Sienna Miller), Tristan (Charlie Cox) promises to bring her a falling star. But he’s in for the adventure of his life when he discovers the star is actually a celestial beauty named Yvaine (Danes) When an old witch Lamia (Pfeiffer) attempts to steal Yvaine’s youth, Tristan must protect her at all costs, in this magical family adventure that will make you fall in love over and over again.

While the characters' names may make you think of Tristan and Isolde and it is a story about lovers, it's not that story. It's got a lot of The Princess Bride's magic that crosses gender divides and has a message for kids and adults. It doesn't have the one-liners the way PB does, but I haven't watched it 20 times, yet. Still, I found myself more introspective after this movie. Perhaps it's just where I am today. But it made me think about what I am doing with my life, how I think about what others say or think or feel. And it reminded me of the great love of my life and how sometimes I take that love for granted.

I was surprised to see that the original story was written by Neil Gaiman, but I guess I shouldn't be. I have several of his books on my wishlist and I know people go nuts for his stuff, but I have yet to get my hands on one of his books. I do remember reading a few of his Sandman comics a long, long time ago, maybe early 90's. By the way, if you haven't seen a picture of Mr. Gaiman, check out the wikilink above, he's hot.

About halfway through the movie, I turned to my dad and said, this reminds me of The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a fun, whimsical, lighthearted Terry Gilliam fest.

Michelle Pfeiffer is glorious as the evil witch, the dead brothers are hysterical as a motley, greek chorus to the inevitable tragedies of each prince, and De Niro is having fun (you can tell) with his character.

Rent it and let me know what you thought.
Amazon.com: Stardust (Widescreen Edition): DVD: Michelle Pfeiffer,Robert De Niro,Claire Danes

And to think I used to hate Will F.

Too cute for words. I don't even know who the first chick is. I kinda agree with Marianne Faithful, and Susan Sarandon--why thank you very much! You know the kind. The one you pick up at the Hallmark store, CVS, even your local grocery store when you forget to get a gift for someone. My husband is to blame. He is the king of thoughtful gifts. Honestly, his mother is really to blame. My deceased-before-we-married mother-in-law (I know many of you will say is the best kind of mother-in-law) was a saint. Sure it's easy to saint someone when the are dead, but she was one of these super PTA moms. She was a stay at home mommy and baked holiday cookies like crazy, huge trays of them for every neighbor, friend and business acquaintance. So maybe that's why I'm thinking of her these days. She taught him and he taught me the beauty of a well thought out gift. To do this, you have to think about the person, what he or she likes, dislikes and loves and try to find a gift that will be useful to them or bring them joy. Sometimes it's something simple they mentioned in passing that they needed but hadn't made time or wanted to spend the money to get themselves (gloves, a wallet, a new purse). But sometimes you have to be a little more creative to figure out what they might like based on their hobbies and interests. A wine book for a winelover, a netflix subscription for the movie buff.

Other times you find a product that screams a certain person's name to you. Tastebook is falls into this second category. I have a friend who is a wonderful cook and baker. She has tons of cookbooks, she swaps recipes and always make the best dish for our monthly potluck. I've stopped trying to outcook her. I just enjoy what she brings to the table and try not to burn my part. A cookbook from Tastebook is perfect for her. I wish I had found it sooner. Tastebook is a compilation of recipes that you can choose from epicurious.com or add your own bound in a hardback binder with gorgeous pictures. You can even add your own pictures of your kids (for grandma) or from a vacation or fun memory. I will be ordering one for her soon. I can't wait!

TasteBook.com: Create cookbooks, search recipes, share recipes

Foodpairing rehearing

Apparently, these flavor trees under the Foodpairing Trees are supposed to help give you ideas of new combinations to try with the main ingredient. I love this kind of food science.

One of my favorite books is called Cookwise by Shirley Corriher, which dissects the science behind how cooking affects food, and then goes on to describe how to cook and combine different foods to get the desired texture, flavor and smells. This site is a tangent of the work in that book (not that they are related) just in my own head.

Because I love artichokes with an intensity and consistency that boggles my mind, here you have THE AMAZING ARTICHOKE:

FreeRice

Test your vocabulary skills and donate rice to end world hunger. FreeRice

Because I'm vain

I'm in the middle of chewing in this picture (I said before that I didn't have a good picture of myself!) Often these benefits are not listed in the State Unclaimed property website. I'm going to send the link to a friend that is active with Estate attorneys. These are the attorneys that frequently handle wills, estates (probate), guardianships and trusts for people. But this is so cool, I have to share.

I love when nature does her funky thing and shocks the H-ll out of us. Check out this picture of giant spider webs at Lake Tawakoni State Park (in Texas, 45 min. from Dallas).

This site has a chronology of the discovery of the web, including comments from Kim Feuerbacher, who happened upon the web a few weeks before it was discovered by the park rangers. She describes what she and her son saw on a bike ride as something out of a science fiction movie. The webs were about 9 feet high and strung across several trees and bushes.

It also describes the discovery by the scientific community of the types of spiders that created the phenomenum. The excitmement of the discovery is palpable. I loved reading about it.

Check out this email from one entemologist just last week:

From: Hank Guarisco/FHSU
Date: 09/06/2007 03:04PM
Subject: spider aggregation at Lk Tawakoni

I have answered the call of the park manager, Donna Garde, for a spider
specialist to check things out. I have been here for several days and am
making some very interesting observations. Do you know of any
Tetragnatha species that has exhibited this kind of behavior? I don't.
The females are actively building webs at night, and the males wander
around. They are often only 1-3 inches apart. It is really amazing. I
heard you identified about 10 species that Mike Quinn sent to you. Would
you please send me the list via email? I am glad you verified the
Tetragnatha guatemalensis. I recognized Neoscona crucifera (only a few),
Larinioides cornutus, Phidippus audax, Agelenopsis and probably
Barronopsis texana, Argyrodes elevatus and their distinctive egg sacs,
Paraphidippus aurantius, Eris militaris, one Argiope aurantia. There are
many Larinioides that come out at night and build webs over everything.

I have seen 2 instances of adult male T. guatemalensis feeding on penultimate males of the same species, five predation events of P. audax on the Tetragnatha, 4 mating events. The egg sacs are everywhere and they are hatching out. The spiderlings start
building webs among the silk strands which are going everywhere. Deep inside, there is Anelosimus studiosus, but not as obvious or common as I originally suspected.

I have been in contact with Gail Stratton, and she advised me concerning what to focus on. It is quite overwhelming at first! A lot of fun. I hope to return in a few weeks to take more data for a paper in JOA concerning the facultative aggregation.

Hank Guarisco
Adjunct Curator of Arachnids
Sternberg Museum of Natural History
Fort Hays State University

I wish I could go see it, but since our September is booked, I'm grateful for those that have posted pictures on the web for us to see.

I bookmooch. Sometimes they just walk away.
Sometimes they act up or out and force you to take a stand.
What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled; their work is done.
The prayer you sent up has been answered and it is now time to move on.
...
When people come into your life for a SEASON,
it is because your turn has come to share, grow, or learn.
They may bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh.
They may teach you something you have never done.
They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy.
Believe it! It is real! But, only for a season.
And like Spring turns to Summer and Summer to Fall,
the season eventually ends.
...
LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons;
those things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation.
Your job is to accept the lesson, love the person/people (anyway);
and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas in your life.
It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.
Thank you for being part of my life.
...
Used with permission
~©Brian A.
